Export Publication of THE WHITE PEARL

Today is special. The export edition of The White Pearl is published in countries worldwide, so I shall soon hear initial reactions and reviews. Always a nervy time. But I was thrilled to hear that in Australia they are doing an interesting offer:- Buy a copy of The White Pearl from any Whitcoulls store and enter a draw to win a Pearl Set from Pascoes Jewellers. Now that's what I call a promotion worth having!

What's an export publication?

Hi Aurora,
An export publication occurs when a book is published in a different format (that usually means in a different size) for the foreign market, but the content is exactly the same. Here in the UK we have a paperback size - called a B format - that is our normal fare in bookshops. But there is a C format that is a larger paperback - the same size as a hardback - and this is popular in countries like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. I have no idea why, but the C format of my books is always published first, so readers out there will get the chance to read THE WHITE PEARL before readers in the UK. (US is publishing in March 2012). Previously, this export edition has always been available on Amazon, but it seems to be unavailable online at the moment. Hopefully this will change. Anyway, Aurora, I hope it's clearer now!!

Yay! Does that mean it will be in book stores in South Africa soon? Very excited :)

Hi Anonymous 6th Dec,
It certainly does! It should have hit the bookstores in SA this week. I am VERY excited.

Does this mean it's out in Australia now?? That's awesome, I was looking at it on Amazon yesterday for my Kindle (just finished Under a Blood Red Sky today), but I'll check out QBD tomorrow and try and pick a copy up!

I'd love to know what a 'Whitcoulls' store is.

I thought the larger format paperback books were called A Format in Australia. I like them - my library collection is full of nice big books. The only problem is they're usually a much higher price! About $32 typically. A lot of bookstores will sell them discounted after the B format has been released though, so I pick up some bargains - like The Jewel of St Petersberg for $8, which is what got me started on reading your books :)

Very keen to start reading!

Got my copy :) Going to start reading it tomorrow! Thanks, and congratulations on the new release!

Hi Bekkaz,
Delighted to hear you got your copy of The White Pearl. Enjoy! Whitcoulls, by the way, is a chain of bookstores in New Zealand, not in Australia, I believe. Thanks for the comments.

Enjoyed reading The White Pearl in Coffs Harbour (Australia) and I finished it in three days because I was so interested in following the twists and turns of the plot. Surprisingly my favourite character was Maya, closely followed by Teddy.

Living in NZ - have just finished reading the large paperback version of The White Pearl. I spent much of my childhood on the Far East and cite Malaysia as one of my favourite countries. I couldn't put it down - I shouted at Connie when she dived in to rescue the pilot "Fool!" and fell a little in love with Fitz "I trsut you!". The plot at times needed a bit of "tongue in cheek" but what the hell - what an adventure! Look forward to the movie! Paperplus here have teamed up with Elizabeth Arden - not sure Connie would approve!

Hi Anonymous 24 December,
Three days is fast reading! Maya was one of my favourite characters to write - ever. I just picked up my pen and her thoughts flowed down onto the paper. It's as near channelling as I'm ever likely to come. Very exciting. Happy you enjoyed it.

Hi Anonymous 29 December,
Hey, a movie would be nice! Great to know that an ardent fan of Malaysia feels a Brit got it right. Your reaction to Connie's foolhardy dive into the water is EXACTLY what I want to hear, that level of involvement and commitment to the characters and story. You know, while I was doing my research for the book, I kept reading of personal stories so bizarre that I would mutter 'No one would believe this if I put it in a book.' Fact is always stranger than fiction! Good to hear from you down in NZ.

I have just finished the White Pearl - it's raining here in New Zealand at our beach house and perfect for three days of "living" the book and all it's characters. I have read all of your books and was amazed to see the new one was in a completely different country. Will there be a sequel??

I finally finished the book! It's taken me a while because I am so used to my kindle now that I'm having a hard time reading paperbacks again!

I loved it :) Maya was definitely a very cool character - I loved her struggle against the natural urge to like Connie, and I really love how she finally gave in to it.

I do have one question though that I think I understand right but am not entirely sure - was Johnny also gay?

And I must say, that final chapter, and the final line of the book in particular, sounds like an ominous warning of a sequel to come. I'd love to read one if that is the case. My grandmother was a cook in the Airforce in the Northern Territory in WWII and it would be great to read a bit about the Japanese invasion of Darwin. If you haven't already, I'd strongly suggest that you watch Australia, the Baz Luhrmann film...it might provide some inspiration! Reading the scenes in the jungle reminded me so much of the island scenes in Australia with the children, and Connie herself is a similar sort of heroine to Nicole Kidman's character.

I can't wait to read your next offering. I'm trying to chase down large format paperbacks of all your other books so that they fit in with my collection (I have The Jewel of St Petersberg, the rest I bought on Kindle). It will be nice to have the full collection. As much as I love e-books and e-readers there's nothing like a bookshelf full of beautiful paperbacks to look at.

Congratulations on another great read!

Hi Anonymous 6 Jan,
Glad to hear you enjoyed The White Pearl and lived the events with the characters. It was a big challenge to go for a new setting and I thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the beautiful and exotic land of Malaya. As for a sequel, not just yet but maybe in the future.

Kate Furnivall said...

Hi Bekkaz,
Great to hear that you loved the book. Maya was such fun to write and, as I said earlier, virtually wrote herself. You are right about Johnnie, yes, he was gay but kept it in the closet as much as possible. He loved Connie and Teddy because they belonged to Nigel, to whom he was devoted. I tried to keep his thoughts and character understated, but I do hope readers picked up on the reality of what he was going through.
As for a sequel, I'd love to do something set in Australia but publishers are wary of sequels. A cook in the Airforce would make a great story. I have indeed seen the film Australia. Baz Luhrmann is an amazing director.
Kindle and e-books do seem to be the way of the future, but I'm with you in wanting the tactile pleasure of a physical book to hold and admire. The White Pearl comes out in the UK in Feb and I'd love it if before then my Aussie fans posted a few comments on Amazon to tell the Brits what lies in store for them!
