My Next Book

2008 is well under way now, so it's time to talk about my new book which will be published this year.

It's called The Red Scarf in America and Under a Blood Red Sky in the UK.

The reason for this is that my two publishers couldn't agree on one title. Apparently it's quite a common occurrence - look at the great Phillip Pullman with Northern Lights also called The Golden Compass. Annoying for an author? My lips are sealed.

Let me say first that my new book is not a sequel to The Russian Concubine. That one is coming out next year, in 2009. But The Red Scarf/Under a Blood Red Sky is also a sweeping epic story. It is set in Stalin's Russia in 1933. At its heart is an intense love story but it is also driven by the powerful bonds of friendship between two young women, Sofia and Anna. It is a mix of tsarist glamour, gulag suffering and rural life in a Urals village which Stalin's fist is slowly squeezing ever tighter. In this book I explore the extraordinary strength of the human spirit and tell a story of love, escape, revenge and redemption.

The Red Scarf will be published in June 2008 in the USA. Under a Blood Red Sky will be published in November 2008 in the UK. I'm very excited about it.

I can't tell you how thrilled I am to hear that there is a sequel planned for "Russian Concubine". I finished the book last night after two days of not being able to put it down and staying up til hours much too late for someone who has to be up with two children at 7! Of course I am also pleased to hear about "The Red Scarf", and I plan to pick up a copy as soon as the book is out.

Thank you thank you thank you for giving me more Lydia, Chang, Liev, and Alexei to look forward to! What a fabulous book you wrote, Ms. Furnivall!

Hi Greyskywoman,
Your comments really help to motivate me. I am deep in the new story with Lydia and at times it's easy to lose one's momentum. Thanks!

I have just finished The Russian Concubine, and I absolutely loved it!! The first chapter had me literally on the edge of my seat talking to my book out loud, and by the end I was crying my eyes out. I would recommend this book to anyone and I cannot wait for the next books to be published!!

Hello from Moscow!

I am Russian and my Australian boyfriend gave me the Russian Concubine as a New Year's present.
Being Russian, I was kind of prejudiced to books and movies about my country written/done by other nationalities, but this book absolutely blew me off my feet!
It is really amazing and so interesting that I went to bed at 4am several days running swallowing the pages! I can imagine the amount of reaserch done and thank you so much for a wonderful life and love story!
Looking forward to your new book and the sequel to the Russian Concubine and if a Russian can be of any help - I would be so happy to contribute!

It took me a day to read the Russian Concubine and I loved it. It saddens me that I have to wait a whole year before the sequal. But I really did love the story,

Hi anonymous (2 March),
I'm really interested to hear the first chapter had such a strong impact. That chapter is pivotal in setting up the motivations and emotions of the rest of the book. I wanted readers to understand the reasons for the characters' deep flaws. As for the tears - well, it touches me to hear about them. Thanks for making contact.

Hi Lena,
Fabulous to hear from Moscow. It's a real tribute to hear that an upstart author's 'Russian characters' ring true. I am so pleased. You may be interested to hear that the Russian publisher, Mir Knigi, is translating The Russian Concubine at this very moment into Russian for publication in Russia.

I adore doing the research - but as a large part of the sequel is set in Moscow (1930/31), I may take you up on your offer of help. My email address is katefurnivall@tiscali.co.uk if you feel like pursuing this further.

Do svidania!

Thanks for your generous comments, anonymous (3 March). Maybe The Red Scarf/Under a Blood Red Sky, to be published this year, will keep you going until the sequel in 2009.

I just finished reading The Russian Concubine and I was terrified I would never know more about Lydia! Thank you so much for planning a sequel!

I look forward to more of your writing.

Hi Jill,
Sorry I somehow missed your post and so didn't get back to you earlier. Good to hear Lydia and Chang got under your skin. Definitely a sequel in summer 2009 but another book is published this year - called The Red Scarf in the USA and Under a Blood Red Sky everywhere else. That should keep you going!
